About Adept Electrical S.L.

In 1993 I started my apprenticeship with the British Army and graduated from the Royal School of Military Engineering as a Royal Engineer (Sapper) ‘Electrician Class 1’. I was then posted to various regiments with the sole purpose of ensuring consistent and reliable electrical services covering a wide range of electrical requirements. I have been tasked with supporting, supplying and repairing all areas of electrical work from installing power supplies via overhead cables, suspended from pylons, emergency supplies via large diesel driven generators, to small domestic repairs in a soldiers mess.

dan smith electrical spainMy postings have taken me all over the world and consequently I have gained much experience working in several different countries and cultures, actually working on electrical systems in four different continents. On at least two occasions I was working as the sole electrical engineer, providing electricity to a Military Field Hospital in the Middle East and I have also been tasked with reconnecting a power supply to an entire Bosnian Village.

In 2002, after a successful military career, I left the army to start out on my own and established Adept Electrical Services Ltd in the UK. The company went from strength to strength in no time, working on many varied electrical jobs from household electrics, to commercial re-wires and industrial installations, building an extensive client database in just two years. Due to family commitments in 2004 I decided to relocate to the Costa Blanca region, setting down roots in the small Village of Busot, just north of Alicante.

At first, working here in Spain was quite difficult as it seemed that you could do pretty much anything you liked with regards to electrics and many people did just that. However I soon discovered that when dealing with the electricity suppliers, electricians in Spain are indeed very highly regulated, unlike those in the UK. In Spain all electricians must pass several examinations, both written and practical and once they prove they are capable they are “officially” registered at ‘Ministerio De Industria’. In the UK anyone can become an electrician without having to pass any tests or gain any qualifications and this makes it very difficult to transfer from one EU country to another. It was at this point that I realised that it was vitally important to obtain firstly, recognition of my qualifications and secondly, a licence to work on electrical installations here in Spain.

Officially licenced to trade as an Electrician in Spain.( Carné de Instalador).

In late 2004 I started what was to be a very long process in achieving this goal. After several visits to various government offices, in Alicante and letters and phone calls to offices in Valencia & Madrid, I finally achieved the first part of my aim and was awarded an accreditation for my qualifications in March 2007. This qualification, however, was of no use to me without a licence. I then embarked on the second and even more difficult task, in acquiring the “Carné de Instalador” (installer licence) held by every Spanish Electrician. During this period I again had numerous visits to government offices, I was even requested to go to Valencia and sit an examination to prove my qualifications once again. To aid me in dealing with the situation I had to take up correspondence with the EU Authorities. Finally, I am pleased to say that in May 2010 I was given my “Licence to Trade” as an authorised electrical contractor here in the Valencian Region. Currently I am the only non-Spanish electrician registered and authorised to be able to issue Boletin’s (Safety Certificates) in the Valencian Region.

Guaranteed by the Ministreo de Industria. Spain's Regulatory Body.

Adept Electrical S.L. was re-launched here in Spain in August 2010, to enable me to assist ex-pats in complying with the electrical safety requirements set in Spain. Being an S.L. company gives my customers the reassurance that any work I undertake is guaranteed by “Ministerio de Industria”.
